Among the Sunflowers: Where to Catch the Sunflowers in Chattanooga

July 18, 2020

A visit to this sunflower field has become an annual tradition for me. My first trip was back in the summer of 2017 when I was newly pregnant with Lilly, and we have been coming ever since. This particular location is Smith-Perry Berries Farm in Ooltewah, TN (about 30 minutes from downtown Chattanooga).

In addition to a sprawling field of sunflowers that stretch on for what seems like miles, the farm also offers strawberry picking and of course, sunflower picking by the bucketful! This is a great location to visit in the early morning or late evening to avoid the incredibly hot sun (& harsh lighting for all my fellow content creators)! The farm is open until sundown, usually about 9pm each evening.

There is no fee to visit the farm, but donations are encouraged. You can take your own photos at no cost as well, but if you are a professional photographer and want to offer sessions at the field, you will have to sign up with the farm as an official photographer, for a small fee. You can find all the information you need from their FaceBook page, here!

We arrived at the farm around 7:45pm but honestly could have waited another 45 minutes to really get that golden hour light when the sun was setting. It was still pretty hot & humid even that late in the day (oh hi, summer in the south), so be prepared to still be a sweaty mess if you come around that time.

For this look, I wanted something fun that would stand out against the flowers but not detract from them. I paired this cute Nostalchicks polka dot dress with my favorite Little Arrow tassel earrings and topped it all with a floppy sunhat (mostly for functionality because, um, HEAT).

One important thing to note about the sunflower field is that they are very short lived. They are in full bloom usually towards the end of June through early July, and you have to time your visit just right to hit critical mass of sunflower epicness. I suggest following them on FaceBook and checking out the geotag on Instagram for the most up to date status on when they bloom and how long they will be around. We're entering the final weeks of peak sunflower time, so if you're near the Chattanooga/east TN area, I highly recommend a visit to the farm!

Currently, masks are required to enter the farm, but you can take them off for photos once you sufficiently distance yourself from others. The farm is huge, so there's plenty of room to spread out.

You can find Smith-Perry Berries Farm at 9626 Ooltewah Georgetown Rd.
