Must See Chick Flicks

February 11, 2020

I have zero shame in admitting it: I love a good chick flick. They’re fun, they’re cheesy, & they’re usually complete escapism. This time of year, I love loading up my Netflix queue with rom coms & pulling out all the chick flick DVDs from my stash (yes. I still watch those). So I thought it would be fun to share a list of my favorite girly films (& also tell you what you NEED to be streaming right now)! February is a great time to spend cozy nights in watching movies, while cuddled up on the couch with your pets (because my hubs sure as hell isn't sitting through double features of The Notebook & How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days. My pups however, have no choice).

There are so many great romcoms & romantic genre type films out there that it’s hard to choose a favorite! These are just some of the newer films I liked enough to purchase on DVD (& that tells you I’ve had these for some time now, as majority of these were acquired either pre-streaming, or in the early days of Netflix, back when the only plan available was to have actual DVDs mailed to your house. Yes, that was how Netflix started, my children. I’m old.)

I'll keep the summaries extremely short & sweet (& sarcastic); and if you want more detail, well, I mean, you're already on the internet...

  • Something Borrowed - sleeping with your best friend's fiancee = drama. Also...John Krasinski.
  • Letters to Juliet - an Italian vacation (um, major FOMO) and getting swept up the love story of a random Italian woman who left a letter in a wall 50 years ago.
  • The Vow - a car crash, a terrible case of amnesia, and basically Channing Tatum getting his wife to fall in love with him all over again. But really, all I heard was "Channing Tatum."
  • Valentine's Day - interconnected stories and a thousand famous big name actors all in the same movie centered around...well, I mean, if you can't tell what this movie is about from the title then you're just going to be really confused watching it.
So moving on from cheesy & unrealistic love stories, next up we have the fun uber chick flick movies! Some classic, some unpopular opinion, and some just here because I wanted them in my list and the DVD was conveniently accessible for a photo:

  • Burlesque - burlesque dancers, Cher + Christina Aguilera (so, a fabulous soundtrack), and some amazing costumes (I want every outfit).
  • Bride Wars - best friend bride-to-be's plan their wedding on the same day; drama (& hilarity) ensue.
  • Girls - the millenial version of  Sex & the City but with way more whining and worse fashion (but still entertaining)
  • Bridesmaids - wedding planning shennanigans, pooping in the street, and a colonial woman on the wing churning butter (classic). If you're confused, just watch this movie. I was in tears from laughter.

So if you'd rather just stream some movies & shows instead, you have a ton of options. I get so overwhelmed sometimes with the sheer volume of just stuff that's available to stream on all the different platforms. It’s hard to keep up! If you’re looking for cute films & TV shows to stream this month, I’ve complied a list of some of my favorites (& some that are being released very soon)!
