Smiling’s My Favorite: At Home Teeth Whitening - Does it Work?

December 19, 2019

*Disclaimer: I was gifted a Smile Brilliant teeth whitening kit in exchange for my honest opinion.

Buddy had it right: smiling is fun! But to be completely honest, it hasn’t always been my favorite. I’m a bit self conscious about my smile because one of my front teeth is recessed & my smile is not perfect. I also drink a LOT of coffee and enjoy indulging in a glass (ok, bottle..) of a really bold cab sav. So over the years, it’s like brightness dial for my teeth has been turned way down. Add that to already crooked teeth, and it’s a recipe for close-lipped smiles forever...or so I thought.

I wanted to try whitening my teeth to help return some of that confidence to my smile I once had (especially this time of year when we’re all capturing those holiday moments & probably squealing with joy over the gifts we’re giving & receiving)! I’ve tried several different whitening products over the years but was never really impressed much by the results. Whitening toothpastes don’t do anything at all for me, and the strips only yielded moderate results at best. So when I heard about the Smile Brilliant teeth whitening kit, I was interested & had to see for myself.

The kit is a completely customized at home whitening system. So where white strips just lay flat across your teeth, this system actually requires you to make a mold of your mouth and you are sent trays to fill with the special whitening gel. Intimidated yet? Yeah, I was too but it’s so much easier than it looks!

So here’s how it works. The kit comes with everything you need to do this professional grade teeth whitening process at home. The first step is to create the molds of your teeth that Smile Brilliant will use to make your trays. Think of this part of the process like art class: you basically get to play with what feels like silly putty or modeling clay. You’re given 2 types to mix together in order to take impressions of your teeth - a base and a catalyst. You roll them around together in your palms until it all turns one solid color of blue (be sure to get rid of any/all white streaks). Then you press that putty into the mold trays you are provided. Next, you gently place the tray into your mouth and let your teeth sink in & hold it in place for a couple of minutes. Beware: you will drool. A LOT. If you’re not drooling, you’re probably doing it wrong ;)

The impressions need to be just right in order for the guys at the Smile Brilliant Lab to work their magic, so you may need to do this a few times (instruction cards with photos are included). Luckily, they provide extra base & catalyst material so you can try again if you mess up. Their team is also really awesome about answering questions & offering guidance (you can even send them photos of your impressions & they’ll tell you if you need to try again or not). This was the part of the process that took the longest for me, because I messed up & had to be sent even more extra mixture to keep trying. 5th times the charm right?! But once I had the perfect impressions, it was all smooth sailing from there. They even give you the return envelope & everything, so you just pop your impressions in the mail & they send you your custom fit flexible trays soon after!

With trays in hand, it’s time to start whitening. They say for the best results you should whiten every day or every other day and use 1/3 of each syringe per session. I get so incredibly busy this time of year and would often forget to whiten, so I had a very random whitening schedule. I would whiten maybe 3 days in a row, skip 2 days, then whiten every other day (basically whenever I had time, often before bed). I still feel like I had great results, but you can work out whatever schedule works best for you.

To start, you’re provided the teeth whitening gel and desensitizing gel to use after. I was nervous on the first try so I only left mine in for about 45 minutes, then used the desensitizing gel for 10-15 minutes afterwards. My teeth didn’t feel sensitive at all, so that was the first & last time I even bothered with the desensitizing gel. From there on, I typically whitened for about 60-90 minutes per subsequent session (& sidenote: it definitely tastes funny if you get some of the gel on your tongue, so that was really the only downside for me).

After about 2-3 weeks of on/off whitening, it was time to evaluate my results! I still hadn’t used all the whitening gel but that’s normal - most won’t use all of the gel provided. I’m sure if I kept going, I could get these pearly whites even brighter!
