Treasure Island Florida

Have you heard of Treasure Island, FL? Yeah, me either - until our Airbnb travels led us to a little beachfront condo right in the heart of Treasure Island. It's conveniently located between St. Pete Beach and Indian Shores, and not too much further from Clearwater, so it offered beachfront property without the pricetag of more densely populated areas. So we packed up the car and away we went for our first official weeklong beach vacation.

Our condo was actually in a converted motel and while the room itself was nothing special, those fire sunsets right in our backyard were truly spectacular. Plus there was a tiki bar & they had a mermaid cocktail, so I was all in.

We arrived in the afternoon but had to stock up on groceries for the week, & spent way too long at Publix and Target. So by the time we made it to the condo, the sun was setting. There's nothing better than sitting on the beach at sunset, a cold drink in one hand, and nothing but the sound of waves crashing against the shore. Pretty idyllic, huh? Now picture that drink being knocked over as your toddler whizzes past you, screeching at the top of her lungs, and then tries to eat fistfuls of sand. Well, at least I still had the sunset...

The next morning, we were up bright & early (not by choice), so we decided to play tourist and head in to Clearwater for the day. First stop was Pier 60, a 1,000 ft fishing pier and park.

Visitflorida.com touts it as a spot "known not only for its spectacular views but also its convenient amenities including playgrounds, telescopes, two massive inflatable slides, public restrooms, a cafe, and a fishing bait and tackle store." Really I just wanted to paste that here because I think it's funny they made a point to highlight the fact that the pier offers public restrooms, like that's some kind of attraction. But in their defense, this is a definite selling point when you have a toddler. Accidents happen...

The pier itself was really cool. It was incredibly long, so you basically felt like you were walking right into the Gulf. There was some great birdwatching going on (really up close & personal stuff), and I can only imagine the sheer carnage if god forbid someone ever brought McDonalds french fries up here and then tripped.

Since it was the first day of vacation, I dressed for the occasion. I paired this fun Old Navy tee with a bright neon maxi skirt and some loud accessories. Clearly, I wanted everyone to know I was on island time & would be having margaritas for breakfast all week.

After the Pier, we stopped in to Palm Pavilion for a drink & some food. We'd been to Palm Pavilion a year earlier, after a friend told us it was a must-do, and now it's become tradition every time we visit. We love sitting out on the patio (often tucked away into a corner once we tell the hostess we have a baby - hey, it's less judgey eyes on my end, so fine by me), and enjoying the ocean view. The drinks are pretty amazing and there are so many that it can be hard to choose.

Next, we headed to the Clearwater Aquarium. Their claim to fame is that the aquarium is home to Winter - you know, the Dolphin Tale dolphin? I've actually never seen the movie, but I've seen Flipper, and that's basically the same thing...well, minus the prosthetic tail and all.

After the aquarium, we made a quick stop at Seaside Seabird Sanctuary. It's completely free (though they do accept donations), and has lots of birds (I mean, it would be weird if they didn't...). These guys were safely in enclosures, so there was no threat of them going all Jurassic Park on me as I strolled through with my ice cream.

There's also a little pathway that leads directly down to the beach, and it was so quiet and peaceful down here. Even if you're not into birds, it's worth it for the pretty photo op, alone.

By the time we were done, we were pretty hungry. So we headed back to the condo to refresh (ie. so I could change clothes for dinner, because as well all know, vacations require new outfits basically for each meal of the day). And since I wasn't yet done annoying my husband with my constant photo taking, I told him to pull over so I could get some photos in front of a random turquoise wall on the side of a hardware store. Yup, that's pretty much how the blogger magic happens, y'all - me yelling at my husband to turn left at the literal last second, so we can pull into an empty parking lot because I saw a fun wall ("true life: I'm a blogger.")

There was some definite eyerolling and intense side eye, but the promise of fresh seafood hung in the air and the sooner he got the shot, the closer we would be to fish & chips.

We stopped at Shells for some of the best seafood I've had in a long time (& I'm not a seafood person, so that's saying something). It was all extremely well priced, too! Thanks, Reddit! If you guys are heading to the St. Pete Beach area, definitely put this place on your to-do list.

After dinner, we headed back to the condo to end our day just like it had begun - with a beautiful ocean view. We watched the sun set, and then headed back in to get some much needed sleep, because we had a full week of beachin' ahead of us.
