The Belk Denim Lab Experience

It's almost August, and that means fall is on its way (I can literally smell the pumpkin spice lattes), and with fall comes back-to-school season and all the shopping that goes with it! Lilly is still a few years out from starting preschool, but that didn't stop us from doing a little pre-back-to-school shopping (ha, like we even need a reason)!

I know it's hard to think about cozy sweaters, knit scarves, and all the fall things when it's literally pushing 100 outside, but I like to get a jump on the upcoming season's fashion, and for me, that means denim (I practically live in jeans come fall & winter). In celebration of back-to-school season and all the new denim hitting stores for fall, Belk rolled out a brand new experience, the Denim Lab, to really allow customers to dial up their style.

Any denim purchase made during the day of the event was basically your VIP pass to the Denim Lab tour bus, where you could get your DIY on and customize your denim pieces with fun patches, all for free (yup, sign me up)! I love the idea of owning unique fashion pieces that no one else will have and wanted to make my own wearable art by mixing and matching patches to bits & pieces of my personality.

I decided on this Levi's Sweet Jane trucker denim jacket as my canvas for a few reasons: it's timeless, incredibly versatile, and (gasp!) I didn't already own one! And so naturally, I got one for Lilly too (a baby in a denim jacket is pretty darn cute). Then it was off to the Denim Lab, which was in a converted bus (literally the cutest bus I have ever seen. I can totally envision myself glamping in this. Or using it as a mobile closet. Maybe both.)

Step one was to pick our patches. It didn't take long for Lilly to find the baskets of patches and get to work on her masterpiece (playing in the patch baskets was easily her favorite part). She picked out all of her own patches (the grizzly bear is my favorite), and we added her nickname to the front of the jacket.

For mine, I wanted the patches to represent me, so I picked ones that had bright colors (pink), were cute (pink flamingo), and some that were a nod to my nickname (seashells, also pink. I'm sensing a theme here). I wanted to add some text, and decided to go with "GIRLBOSS" but "HOLD MY ROSÉ" and I GOT THIS" were also contenders. Now I'm thinking I may need more jackets...

We arranged the patches on the back, and with a little help from the incredibly friendly Belk Denim Lab team (the real MVPs), we pressed the patches onto the jacket. What could have been my 100th Pinterest fail turned out to be a win!

With our jackets completed, the only thing left was to take them for a spin. It was hot, y'all, but a jacket this cute deserved some time to shine. Plus, the Belk team had set up an photobooth perfect for capturing everyone's new creations.

One thing I love about Belk is their incredibly large selection of fashion and brands - everything from dresses and shoes to handbags and home goods. I often source a lot of my Lilly Pulitzer styles from Belk, but while I love a bright LP print, it would have been too busy to pair with a denim patch jacket. So I picked up this True Craft smocked wrap dress instead because it was the perfect combination of whimsy and casual comfort. Plus the pink & orange stripes reminded me of candy, and I was all about that vibe.

Lilly really enjoyed all of the kids activities they had setup, like the coloring station and the sidewalk chalk (she was generously "gifted" a blue marker by the team when she wouldn't let go of it, haha). We attempted some mommy + me photos, but it was just a bit too hot out paired with the jacket (we're still working on the concept of "do it for the gram".)

Overall, we had such a fun time at this event and hope Belk rolls out more interactive shopping experiences like this (how fun would a Beautyshop bus be? Makeovers, blowouts & champagne with any beauty purchase perhaps? Throw champagne into any event though & I'm there)!

Want to check out the Denim Lab Experience for yourself? The bus will be rolling in to a couple more cities on their tour!
  • Columbia, SC - July 27th
  • Greenville, SC - July 28th
  • Charlotte, NC - August 3rd
  • Winston Salem, NC - August 4th

Thanks so much to Belk for hosting us! Be sure to check them out for all your fall style needs!
