The Rainbow Connection

June 30, 2018

"Someday we'll find it
The rainbow connection
The lovers, the dreamers, and me
.
All of us under its spell, we know that it's probably magic"

Fashion is a form a self-expression, and for someone who is just slightly obsessed with all things Disney (OK. A lot obsessed. I make no apologies!), combining the 2 is an obvious choice. Since I live 8 hours away from the nearest Disney park, I like to infuse a little piece of that magic into my everyday wardrobe. But we’re not talking full on princess gowns and literal costumes here (though going for a Target run in a glittering Belle ballgown would be quite a sight to see!). You can dress in Disney using even the subtlest of details – but I definitely will not judge you if you go full throttle Mickey, either!

Sprinkling your wardrobe with a little pixiedust can be as easy as putting pieces together in your favorite character’s color palette or accessorizing with a Disney inspired clutch or necklace. There are so many Disney products out there, it can be hard to pick & choose which pieces to add to your collection, but even if you don’t own an arsenal of Disney Dooney bags or 30 shirts with Mickey’s face plastered all over them, you can still easily (and more subtly) dress with Disney in mind.
My style is very much a mixture of official Disney brand pieces, small shop products, and budget finds (think Ross, TJ Maxx, and Marshalls). But I’m finding I turn to vintage more & more. Vintage offers a whole new world (see what I did there?) of possibilities for putting together Disney inspired looks. Today, I'm sharing a retro & colorful look inspired by the yesteryears of Disneyland.

When I came across this true vintage ‘60s rainbow striped maxi skirt, my mind immediately screamed “DISNEYLAND!” The colors of this skirt were throwing total retro Disneyland sign vibes, and there’s a bit of Fantasyland mixed in there too (can't you just see this color pattern as one of the Fantasyland tents?). Unfortunately, like majority of 50s and 60s vintage, the waist was TINY (like 22” tiny, and while I am petite, I am definitely not Barbie), but it wasn’t anything a little bit of temporary safety pinning couldn’t fix – until I have time to properly alter the waist. The skirt was too adorable to pass up simply because the waist needed to be let out a few inches. This is completely do-able on your own or pretty affordable if you opt for the help of a seamstress, so don’t let a too-tiny waist on an otherwise perfect & gorgeous vintage piece scare you away!

I paired the skirt with a bright yellow top and the quintessential Disney castle necklace. Petty much every Disney fan owns this necklace, but for good reason - it is so simple and delicate and is the perfect addition for a soft touch of magic (available in the Disney parks). I accessorized with a few other pieces like this Cinderella Alex+Ani bracelet (thanks, hubs!), DCrew Design cuff, and Loungefly Minnie bag. I also like sporting pins and buttons with my outfits for a little added flair. It's little touches like these that you can easily mix+match with any outfit.

I may not be strolling down Main Street, but that's no excuse why I can't still express my Disney style! I'm drawn to bold, bright colors, fun patterns, and anything with a great "twirl factor" to channel my inner Disney princess. Plus, a bag with Minnie ears on it - and it comes in pink? That was a no-brainer for me.

Here are a few of my tips to infuse a little Mickey+Minnie magic into your everyday style:
  •  If you're going for subtlety, avoid direct character likeness. Go for things like quotes/text, a silhouette, or small accessories. But if you want to wear it loud/wear it proud, by all means, dress head-to-toe in whatever Disney characters you want. You do you, girl!
  • Disney inspired jewelry, enamel pins, and 1" buttons are great ways to elegantly add a touch of magic to any outfit.
  • If you're going simple with the threads, go bold with your bag -  I love the Disney x DN, Loungefly, and Boxlunch bags!
  • Don't be afraid to thrift your Disney style or wear vintage. You can find so many one of a kind pieces if you just dig a little deeper! ;) Check out your local thrift store or hit up some garage/estate sales - because who doesn't want a 1950s Cinderella blue tulle prom dress hanging in their closet?
  • Disneybound! Shop with characters & general Disney in mind. See a dress or skirt that reminds you of something inherently Disney? Take that piece & play off the color palette and pattern to build an entire outfit.
